SILVER PROOF COIN
This pure silver (99.9%) $5 Crown size 36.31-gram proof coin is a perfect
way to commemorate the Commonwealth Games and celebrate
Australia's athletes. The reverse of the coin depicts a powerful image
of a group of victorious athletes standing above a laurel wreath with
arms raised in triumph forming a stylized crown. The design draws
inspiration from the official Manchester Games logo. Surrounding this
depiction is the wording: 'The XVII Commonwealth Games
Manchester 2002'. The obverse features the standard effigy of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley and, in words, the
denomination - 'Five Dollars' and 'Elizabeth II Australia 2002'.
Brought out by the Royal Australian Mint this coin has a limited
mintage of 15000. This striking proof coin comes to you housed in a
silver powder coated metal case that slips into a tastefully coloured and
embossed outer box with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the
Mints controller.
Reverend Astley Cooper was the first to suggest having an all British
Empire Games in 1981 and in 1930 the first British Empire Games was
held in Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. The name held until 1954 when
they were renamed the British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
From 1966 to 1974 they were called the British Commonwealth Games
and since 1978 the have been known as the Commonwealth Games.
Australia can be proud of the record of achievement of its athletes in
the Commonwealth Games over the years. While at the first Games in
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1930, English athletes won the most
medals; Australian athletes have consistently received the greatest
share of medals over the modern era games. This coin is dedicated to
the Commonwealth Games and honours Australia's athletes, as well as
all other competitors participating in the 2002 Games.
