2003 MASTERPIECES IN SILVER
PORT PHILLIP PATTERNS
This is a stunning collection of coins that has been released by the Royal
Australian Mint and highlights various aspects of Australian culture as
well as our general and numismatic history. The 'Masterpieces in
Silver' Set is an annual release and this one has been brought out to
celebrate 'The Port Phillip Patterns'. There are four coins in this set,
each one struck from 99.9% Fine Silver and are legal tender under the
Australian Currency Act 1965. The set features a $1, $2, $5 and $10
coin, each having one of the designs that were used by the Kangaroo
Office.
This set highlights, on the 150th anniversary of the patterns production, an
interesting, but little known numismatic enigma. In 1853 a press and
dies were specially sent to Melbourne from England to produce tokens
from low priced Victorian gold. The business venture never succeeded
and even the production of trade tokens could not save it. The story
surrounding the establishment of this venture in Melbourne, the
surprising discovery in the early 20th century of the dies, which were
supposedly disposed of, and the occasional appearance of a Port Phillip
Pattern, all make this issue an interesting addition to Australian
numismatic history. A striking, yet mysterious set of coins that holds a
puzzling history that is bound to be the centerpiece of any collection.
