2003 RUGBY WORLD CUP
SELECTIVELY GOLD PLATED PROOF COIN
To commemorate the historic occasion of the Rugby World Cup 2003, being
solely hosted for the first time in Australia, the Royal Australian Mint has
issued a special silver proof coin. It has a monetary value of $5 and is one
Troy Ounce. Made from 99.9% pure silver, the coin features 24ct selective
gold plating which highlights the magnificent prize at the centre of this
wonderful sporting event…the William Webb Ellis Cup.
This proof coin has been painstakingly produced using the Mints latest
technology. It's a process, which involves selectively gold plating the centre
of the reverse of the coin, and then having the design of the trophy struck
on the gold plating. An international mintage of only 20000 coins is small
considering the potential international demand, not only from dedicated coin
collectors, but also from rugby fans in Australia and from rugby playing
nations around the world. This is Australia's only official proof coin struck
to celebrate Rugby World Cup 2003, struck exclusively by the Royal
Australian Mint, and accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
The coin comes to you housed in a navy blue leather like display case. Much
like attending Rugby World Cup 2003, this limited proof coin issue is a
once in a lifetime occasion.
